September 21, 2011
September 21st, designated as the "World Day of Peace" by the United Nations, represents the cease of warfare, as well as transnational solidarity, reconciliation of humanity, bringing people together through the ideals and values. In the view of the difficult international economic conditions states are experiencing today, a further melioration of relations among States and the practical demonstration of support and solidarity are necessary. The idea of the cease of hostilities was born in Greece on the occasion of the Olympic Games. This is one of the purposes of creating the Olympic Games, the Olympic truce, the principle of concord among Greeks.
From Greece and Ancient Olympia, a city-global symbol, birthplace of the Olympic ideal, let's send the world a strong message about cease of hostilities and threats of violence. The practice of warfare should belong to the past. The protection of human life and of the natural environment from the warfare, the elimination of any threat to peace and the security of a life in dignity should be among the highest priorities. |
